The Great Lakes region highlighted above surrounds the State of Michigan. Five Great Lakes - Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario - comprise our
world's largest group of freshwater lakes with the region having one-fifth of global supply. Eight
states border Great Lakes - Illinois, Indiana, Michigan,
Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin -
as well
as the Canadian Province of Ontario. Adding contiguous states of
New Jersey, West Virginia, Kentucky, Missouri, and Iowa equates to
one-third of the U.S. population and almost 40% of USA / Canadian trade to the
world. Combined with numerous research universities and extensive
inventive power the area is a significant economic engine - in GDP terms one of
the largest economies in the world. Historically an average of one-third USA patents are awarded to Great Lake States while
producing a similar percentage of science / engineering degrees
